The Isle of Anglesey is a vast-feeling landscape of coastlines that alternate between rugged and rocky, and soft, golden sandy. • Sandy Mount House is a stylish hotel and restaurant close to the coast in Rhosneigr. Its seven rooms and suites are beautifully decorated, with something of a nautical theme — think heavy ropes and a nice rustic blend of blue, cream and neutrals, with wicker chairs, leather-covered chests, and sisal or pale wooden floors. The restaurant champions Welsh specialities and local produce, and there’s a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

• The Bull's Head Inn is historic on the outside, and relatively contemporary on the inside. There are 25 rooms and suites, decorated in a variety of colours and styles, plus a restaurant serving pub classics and a well-stocked bar. Travel Information

• The closest airports to the Isle of Anglesey are Manchester Airport and Liverpool Airport. Manchester is about three hours away by rail, or an hour and three quarters by car. You can’t get all the way to Anglesey by rail, you have to catch a taxi or hire car from Llanfairpwll. Liverpool Airport is about the same distance away by car, but about four and a half hours by rail. If you’re coming from the direction of London it’s definitely worth catching the train rather than flying, because the Isle of Anglesey is only just over three hours from London Euston — though the last leg, from Bangor, will require a hire car or taxi.

• Anglesey, Holy Island and the skerries that make up the Isle of Anglesey are islands, and they benefit from island humidity and the temperature regulating powers of the sea. But they’re also prone to regular rainfall and even buffeting by storms. The nicest time to visit as far as the weather is concerned is spring, late spring most precisely, because the wildflowers are out, the days are getting longer, and there’s not, generally, too much rain. Summer is warmest, but can be quite rainy. The Isle of Anglesey’s attractions are worth visiting year round, though during winter the days can feel quite short.
