About Newport

Newport, on the Pembrokeshire Coast, might be the wild card in some of our Gurus’ beach holiday destination recommendations, but this dark horse has plenty of surprises in store. It feels wonderfully tucked away with a spectacular backdrop, its beaches are long, smooth and inviting, and it’s got a thriving foodie scene. Despite its small size it has quite a few offerings accommodation-wise, and our list of the best places to stay in Newport includes a very friendly restaurant-with-rooms, and a totally charming guesthouse.

Newport’s port expanded from its Norman roots during the 12th century flourishing of the wool trade. It was also known for its pottery, and the town’s memorial hall has a wonderfully complete excavated medieval pottery kiln on display to prove it. It’s not a large town, but in the space between the sea and the village’s castle on Carningli Mountain, which overlooks the town, there’s plenty to entertain.

There are lots of places to eat in town, including great cafes, friendly pubs, and excellent restaurants — one of which appears as a restaurant-with-rooms on our list of the best places to stay in Newport. Newport is a great base for keen walkers too, it's super convenient for the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which loops around the cliffs to the north. There are lots of shorter trails around town too, through woodlands, across the sand dunes, and around the area’s old lime kilns. Just along the coastline — a longer walk, or a short drive away — is Newport Sands, a beautiful mile of pale sand, much loved by beach enthusiasts, but also by kayakers and canoeists.

The Best Places to Stay in Newport

For Foodies

  • Llys Meddyg 'Doctor's Court' is an artistic, family-run restaurant with rooms. Converted from a welcoming, large stone cottage, the restaurant takes up the ground floor and there are nine rooms above. Locally produced art features in all the rooms, and in the restaurant, which is known for championing local produce. In the summer the restaurant spills out into a lovely garden. The restaurant runs hunting, gathering and foraging courses, as well as cooking classes. Walkers, as well as foodies, love this hotel, and it’s great for families too.

For Great Value

  • Pretty Cnapan Guesthouse is a converted home, with five cheerfully decorated bedrooms — including some twin rooms and family suites. Investment has been made where it matters: in comfortable beds, fine linens and pretty fabrics. The views are another feature, though not all of the rooms have equally charming views. They do all have an access to a beautifully cared for garden, and the cosy, fire-lit lounge.

Travel Information

  • Cardiff Airport and Bristol Airport are the closest airports for Newport: Cardiff is around two hours away by car or taxi, or four hours by train; and Bristol Airport is just shy of three hours away by car, and about six hours away by rail.
  • If you would like the freedom of your own car we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Newport is a beach town, but it’s not a hot beach town. Even in the summer months the temperature hovers around 20°C. The coastal position keeps things mild, but the pay off is the humidity, and the regular rain and showers. The summer is drier, but there’s still enough rain to keep the landscape looking lush and Pembrokeshire green.
