About Sheffield

People have been living on the spot that is now Sheffield for around 13,000 years, making it one of the oldest settled places in the UK. Not surprising really, it's a scenic spot with views of the Pennines and the River Sheaf running through. Indeed, it's right on the edge of Peak District National Park and an ideal base if you like both city and country vibes. Our pick of the best places to stay in Sheffield include a pub with rooms, a smart boutique hotel and a charming country house hotel on the outskirts of town.

Sheffield is known for its historic role in the Industrial Revolution, when it was a giant of the steel industry, a centre for production, trade and innovation. This history is apparent in the many Georgian and Victorian buildings — factories especially — some of which been transformed into museums, galleries, shopping centres, and even hotels.

A post-industrial transformation has been rolling over Sheffield for the last few decades, and the city has been reimagined as a hub of culture, arts and music. Sport has always been big here — Sheffield has the world’s oldest football club, and the world’s oldest football ground — and it’s also known for hosting the World Snooker Championship. But now the city hosts numerous arts and music events too. It’s definitely worth picking up a gig guide and checking dates, because there’s always something going on in Sheffield.

It's obviously a destination that services both business and leisure sectors and has year-round appeal. For these reasons, if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Sheffield, do your research and book well ahead.

The Best Places to Stay in Sheffield

For Romantics

  • The Whitley Hall Hotel has been converted from a handsome, 16th century mansion, set in 20 acres of gardens and woodland on the outskirts of Sheffield. It offers 32 guest rooms, spread between the original house and a newly built wing. Rooms in the original building are more opulent, with some four-poster beds, wood-panelling, exposed beams and fireplaces. Our favourite rooms overlook the courtyards, stone terraces and lake beyond. The bar is a cosy, pub-style affair, and there’s an excellent restaurant.

Best Pubs-with-Rooms

  • The Florentine is a rather grand-looking pub-with-rooms just outside the centre of Sheffield. Its eleven guest rooms are smart and contemporary, with very nice linens and fabrics, and White Company toiletries. The bar offers fresh bright interiors, with a friendly buzz, and the pub restaurant food is very good.

For a boutique stay

  • Brocco On The Park is an eight room boutique hotel converted from a redbrick townhouse. The owner and designer has decorated with simple, minimalist comfort, in a mostly monochrome palette, and the whole house has a feeling of light and space, including the award-winning, Michelin recommended restaurant, which serves Scandinavian-inspired food throughout the day.
