Spectacular Santorini is known for its beautiful high-end hotels, with incredible infinity pools and terraces overlooking one of the world’s most breathtaking views. So it might surprise you to hear that our Gurus had no problem coming up with recommendations for budget conscious travellers wanting to visit this magical destination. None of their recommendations compromise on views, they all seem to have incredible settings, but there are quite a few without a restaurant — though that’s not a problem considering how many great places to eat and drink there are here. Our Gurus have plenty of recommendations for families, as well as for romantics. Travelling out of season will make these picks even more affordable.
For the Views

- The Apanemo Hotel offers stunning caldera views from its postcard-perfect position on the cliffs at Akrotiri. The views from the stepped pool and terrace are incredible, but the majority of the 27 apartment-style suites have private terrace or balconies with incredible views too. Outside the Apanemo couldn’t be more perfectly Cycladic, with plenty of white, bougainvillea, succulents, blue accents and natural stone, and inside the rooms offer Mediterranean-style comfort. There’s no restaurant, but they offer an impressive buffet breakfast each day. Great for families too.
For a Special Occasion

- The 11 room Hotel Ilioperato is a charming, traditionally Cycladic choice, with whitewashed walls inside and out, and stepped terraces. Each room or apartment has a private terrace or balcony, and small kitchenettes — the deluxe accommodation features private hot tubs too — and the largest apartments sleep up to five. There’s no restaurant, but breakfast is delivered to your door.
For Romantics

- The Notos Therme and Spa is a romantic, 29 room hideaway built into the volcanic cliffs on one of Santorini’s last relatively undeveloped bits of coast, close to Vlihada, a tiny fishing harbour on the ‘heel’ of the island. The hotel’s stepped terraces offer wonderful views of the marina, the only one on Santorini, and the ocean. The spa is good enough to appear as a feature in the name, and is well known for its volcanic springs bursting forth from the cliff, and its treatment rooms, which are carved into the rock like caves. Plus there’s an excellent Mediterranean restaurant.
For Families

- The Santorini Kastelli Resort is a brilliant white building in the traditional Cycladic style, arranged around a huge central courtyard and pool, and surrounded by pretty, colourful gardens. And you’re just steps from a black sandy beach on Santorini’s cheerful east coast. It’s a charming effect, with a definite ‘island holiday’ vibe. There are 60 rooms, suites and villas available, with a great range of family-friendly options. The décor is simple and chic, and there’s plenty of space for families to spread out. There are two restaurants onsite, including a poolside pick, and there are plenty of fun local tavernas too. There’s also a spa and tennis courts onsite, and fantastic watersports facilities on the beach.
- Mill Houses is a traditional Cycladic hotel perched on the cliffs in the pretty village of Firostefani. Its views across the caldera are magnificent — from the pool terrace, and from private balconies. There are just 13 rooms and suites, simply and tastefully decorated; some are suitable for families, with self-catering facilities provided. There’s a great Mediterranean restaurant too, and a bar and library.
- The Aria Lito Mansion is quite different from the majority of our Santorini recommendations: it’s much more like a Mediterranean villa hotel, converted from a private mansion. Its 16 rooms and suites have been cleverly designed to include all the mod cons, and chic, contemporary hotel-style decor. There are a lot of gorgeous views too, and luxurious facilities, like in-room massages and wine tastings. They serve breakfasts, but no other meals, and families are welcome.
For Fun!

- The Callia Retreat Suites is a chic collection of 17 suites, decorated with contemporary style, in central Thira. Each suite has a private terrace, and the smartest have their own hot tub too. The elegant hotel pool has resort-style day beds, palm trees, and a cool bar. There’s no hotel restaurant, but you’re surrounded by places to eat and drink, and they do a lavish breakfast, and a snack menu in the bar. Adults only.
For a Beach Break

- Acqua Vatos is a gorgeously converted villa hotel in Kamari, which is within a charming stroll of one of Santorini’s longest, and most popular, black-sand beaches. Its 32 rooms and suites are decorated with contemporary style, plenty of white, but bold pops of colour too. The pool is large and luxurious. They serve an excellent breakfast and are well located for Santorini’s best bars and restaurants.
