The Madrid de Los Austrias area spreads out around the Plaza Mayor, reaching approximately to the end of the Hapsburg-built slate-roofs - as the crow flies. This is the oldest part of Madrid, and home to some fantastic tapas bars - both traditional and modern, and some equally great restaurants and cafes. So you’ll have no problem with travel or dining out if you choose to book into one of the 4 best hotels in Madrid de Los Austrias.
After getting an idea of which tapas bars you really can’t miss, head over to the Plaza Mayor, which is probably Madrid’s best known plaza, and has been a bullfighting ring, a market, and a place of execution. Though these days it’s more about cafes, shops and restaurants, a beautiful tourist information centre and the statue of Philip III.
As well as being in the centre of some seriously lovely architecture and some seriously delicious foodie options, staying here also means you wake up a few minutes from the Royal Palace, the Puerta del Sol, the Rastro flea market and the San Miguel deli market. You’re also only a short walk from the art treasures of the Paseo del Prado and the rich pickings of the Gran Vía.
The ME Madrid Reina Victoria is rather grand and timeless on the outside, but simple - almost minimalist - on the inside, which is a pleasing combination for many of us. There are 192 rooms and suites, plus a rooftop bar and a fantastic restaurant. Indulgent without being too fussy.
