Hout Bay, ‘Houtbaai’ or even ‘The Republic of Hout Bay’ to some (after a local prankster went a bit too far and created a passport for the inhabitants of this friendly neighbourhood) lies at the foot of the Table Mountain National Park. With its laidback vibe, this working fishing town is loved by both tourists and locals. There is a good hotel scene here too and it's the perfect place to base yourself if you want to experience the best of both city and beach. Our pick of the best hotels in Hout Bay include a designer B&B and an ultra luxurious lodge right on the Atlantic ocean. Hout Bay also boasts plenty of family-friendly boutique stays.
Under a 30-minute drive from Cape Town, it is surrounded on all sides by craggy mountains, opening out onto the sparkling blue bay. From here, embark on windy walks along the beach, set out for sea on a fishing trip or pay a visit to Seal Island. Budding surfers might wish to take on one of Hout Bay’s ominous-sounding ‘Dungeons’ – one of the largest waves known to the Western Cape, with swells being recorded up to 14 m high. With its diverse marine life, Hout Bay is home to some of the finest tuna, a huge variety of pelagic sea birds (many of which and more can be spotted at World of Birds), as well as the endangered abalone, and lots and lots of seals! Its lively harbour, strewn with boats and seafood restaurants, gets particularly busy on weekends and in the summer months.
Don't forget that this is a popular little destination especially during the peak summer months, so if you want to guarantee a room in one of Hout Bay's best hotels, get organised and book well ahead.
Cape Town
The only hotel within Table Mountain's National Park, this luxurious lodge provides five-star accommodation combined with gourmet dining. A small team caters to every need, but the real charm is in the attention to detail. Rooms include capacious beds and views across the Atlantic Ocean. Divine.

Cape Town
One of a kind! This architecturally impressive hotel stands out from the rest. Its white, cubist design strikes a stark contrast against the leafy, gardens and secluded Hout Bay setting. Rooms are minimal but with all the necessities, plus there's an inviting pool. Breakfast is served. We love!
Cape Town (Scott Estate, )
Overlooking Hout Bay's harbour, Hout Bay Manor enjoys an enviable location and beautifully appointed rooms. Dating back to 1871, the interiors reflect its heritage status and the bohemian character of its locale: four-poster beds, plush fabrics, and vibrant décor. A superb breakfast is served.
