Behind a vast oak door, near Grand Baie in the north of the island, is 20° Sud – an elegant boutique hotel set in an old coconut grove. Privately-run, the hotel has 28 bedrooms and six suites – all air-conditioned and individual in style – with Belgian-designed, shabby-chic interiors and bathrooms equipped with both a shower and a bath. For those who value their privacy we recommend booking one of the suites, which are slightly removed from the main action. A far cry from some of the island’s brash and modern resorts, 20° Sud offers civilised living at its best; afternoon tea, complete with superb cakes and pastries, is served each day and a 12+ age policy ensures a haven of peace. In addition to the main restaurant, the M/S Lady Lisbeth, a beautiful 55-foot launch embarks on nightly gastronomic cruises. And it's worth noting that the food is superb across the board. Drag yourself away from the freshwater swimming pools (the main one can feel a bit busy at times, surrounded by restaurant, bar and rooms), visit the small private beach and tranquil gardens, plus there are bikes, dinghies and windsurfers to hire, daily snorkelling trips and a free shuttle across the water to Grand Baie. The staff at 20° Sud also deserve a mention — they are attentive and friendly throughout. All in all a slice of low-key luxury in a fabulous location.
