Barr is a somewhat overlooked town in Alsace but it is a quiet and picturesque destination with all the charm of neighbouring towns, from typical cobbled streets to half-timbered houses. The 5 Terres Hôtel & Spa is a hidden gem in this unassuming town; part of the M Gallery group by Sofitel, its traditional exterior belies a luxurious and modern bolt-hole. Rooms are simple and elegant with splashes of rich purple or gold and impossibly soft sheets; the Signature Suite is the highlight, with a pretty balcony overlooking the beautiful vineyards surrounding the town. The hotel boasts an organic restaurant; headed by chefs Axelle Gillig & Mathias Stelter, guests can enjoy modern interpretations of French classics with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The jewel in the crown of this hotel has to be the sandstone spa; located in a cavernous space underneath the main hotel, it offers a pool, hammam, sauna and a variety of treatment rooms. Unwind with a massage before heading to the intimate hotel wine bar to taste a selection of local grapes in a warm, cosy setting. Without a doubt, the 5 Terres makes for a stylish hotel with great facilities.
