“This boutique lodge is located in Bhutan's Phobjikha valley. Suites feature king-size beds, traditional wood-burning stoves and terrazzo-clad bathtubs. Experience a hot stone bath with valley views in the hotel spa after a traditional Bhutanese meal in a candlelit potato hut; a unique rural getaway.”

Hotel review

Built in the remote Phobjikha Valley, Amankora Gangtey stands out for its blend of local tradition and contemporary design. At just twelve suites the hotel is truly boutique, and service is personalized but relaxed, with a focus on meditation, tranquillity and nature. Suites at the hotel are spacious and stylish with heated slate floors, wood-burning stoves and a freestanding tub with valley views. Each room has a cosy seating area positioned next to the fireplace for warmth and comfort. Sink-in beds are dressed in fine linens and throws made from local textiles. Request the corner suite for double views from two windows. The hotel offers a range of activities for guests, from complimentary meditation classes at the Buddhist shedra to evening drinks at the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre. For outdoorsy visitors there is the option of guided bike rides; this valley is also well-located for hikes to a number of famous Buddhist shrines. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant, headed by star chef Adrian Broadhead; expect a casual atmosphere with excellent food made from locally sourced ingredients. Retreat to the hotel's wraparound balcony for drinks with a view before a game of traditional Bhutanese darts. For ultimate relaxation, book a hot stone bath or an in-suite massage. A luxurious mountain retreat.

Amankora Gangtey

Farmhouse-style, 12-suite Gangtey Lodge took three years to build (without electricity) in Phobjikha, one of the country’s more isolated valleys, where sacred black-neck cranes migrate in winter.
