“A picturesque hotel in 27 acres of tropical gardens on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River – with a swimming pool & a soothing spa to boot. Iconic, the hotel has been a Bagan stalwart since its opening in 1922 & rooms have characterful carved wood & traditional craft pieces. An old-school charmer. ”

Hotel review

This Old Bagan establishment, which opened for the visit of King Edward VIII in 1922, makes the most of its superb location on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. The Acacia Shade Restaurant, on a breezy waterfront patio, serves an amazing breakfast spread, ranging from French pastries to vermicelli soup (if you feel like a taste of Myanmar first thing). There’s an egg and pancake station as well as an old longboat, where fruit juices are squeezed before your eyes. Next-door, Panorama Bar, with its wooden deckchairs overlooking the river, is one of the best places to watch the sun set over the river. Guest rooms are housed in little cottages, either on the bank (the Ayeyarwady River Suite and Deluxe River View rooms) or dotted among verdant lawns and tropical hedgerows. Rooms categories differ dramatically, and where the Garden View Deluxe rooms are very comfortable (warm walnut-hued wooden floors, vibrant yellow-gold curtains and indulgent bathrooms), the Superior and Economy are more basic and feel a little dated. Whichever you pick, there’s a huge pool to flop into as well as an underground spa, where you can have a serious post-sightseeing pummelling; although, be warned, the Myanmar massage is not for the faint-hearted.
