“Atmospheric mock medieval house with award winning spa set amid 30 acres of private parkland with direct beach access. Large rooms feature high beamed ceilings, antique four poster beds and luxury bathrooms. Dine in equally sumptuous surrounds. Well positioned from London as a weekend get away. ”

Hotel review

A realistic medieval mock-up created in the 1920s by Walter Guinness, later Lord Moyne, and his wife Evelyn. She had a passion for all things medieval; they bought land on which a small 13th century chapel already stood, and built a bewitching folly using a wide variety of authentic materials, from the golden Somerset stone walls to the vast 15th century oak front door from South Warnborough church. Nowadays it boasts a spa, with indoor and outdoor pools, in a contrastingly airy building,. The hotel’s lawns are dotted with toy town medieval outbuildings, flowers, shrubs and peacocks, and the chef’s latest experiment: caged hams hanging from trees to cure. Climping Beach is a stroll away across the meadows.

"An eccentric Gothic mansion on the south coast, Bailiffscourt is bursting with quirky features, from the cramped sitting rooms stuffed with antiques to the French assistant restaurant-manager who has renounced trousers in favour of a kilt."
