Behind its ochre-coloured façade which stands on one of Lisbon’s prettiest squares, the Bairro Alto hotel brims with a sense of place. Interiors, by Atelier Bastir, draw on Portuguese brands, local artists, antique and vintage pieces, overlaying them on Portuguese tiles and marble. The building housing the original hotel, which opened in 2005, has been skilfully woven by Pritzker-prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura to fit seamlessly with the three new adjoining buildings (all dating from the 18th century) which now form the whole, offering a total of 87 rooms. The crowning glory is the roof terrace where at BAHR, Nuno Mendes and Chef Bruno Rocha deliver dishes that pay homage to Portugal such as wild turbot with chickpeas and smoked ham or grilled squid with runner beans, turnip tops and seaweed.
Bedrooms are joyful – think walls of duck egg blue with a red leather desk, wooden floors topped by a black, white and red rug, the colours of which are echoed in the tiled floor of the bathroom. Or, as in the original hotel bedrooms, wallpapers of hand-painted birds. All rooms display the attention to detail which makes this hotel what it is – even down to a supply of postcards and stamps for your use.
There is a small fitness and wellness centre and a massage room which uses the Suzanne Kauffman product range.

"On the fringes of the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, with its cobbled lanes and lively bars, this cool, stylish Lisbon hotel combines period and modern features and offers an excellent dining experience in its ground-floor Flores Restaurant."
