The latest offering from the team behind The Rookery and Hazlitts, Batty Langley's is a treat, a million miles away from the pared back minimalist interiors so often favoured in modern hotels. Located in the increasingly trendy Spitalfields area, it's a stone's throw from Old Spitalfields Market and just minutes from Liverpool Street station, which offers easy access to the wider London area. Set in a charming narrow cobbled street, the 18th century vibe is all too evident, with period details including old fashioned streetlamps just adding to the atmosphere. Once inside you're enveloped in quirky interiors that make for a very special stay. Rooms are crammed with antiques and period features, from wood panelling, fireplaces, and heavy silk drapes to canopied four poster beds and period artworks on the walls. The pièce de résistance is the 2-level Earl of Bolingbroke penthouse suite with luggage lift, hidden panel with copper baptism sink, grand Tuscan marble bathtub, enormous canopied bed built for a bishop and a terrace. There's an honesty bar in the Tapestry Room, and the welcome bonus of a pretty courtyard for sitting out when the weather allows. There's no inhouse restaurant, but the 24 hour room service offers sustenance for those who can't bear to leave this luxurious cocoon.
