Bedrooms feature contemporary interior design with vintage touches and modern artwork; book a suite for a four-poster bed and living area. Hotel review

Nestled in the heart of Lisbon is the 'Baixa' or downtown district, the living, breathing heart of the city, offering up beautiful, wide avenues, bustling plazas and Pombaline architecture. Occupying a landmark townhouse in this neighbourhood is Brown's Central Hotel, a stylish, downtown property that mirrors the eclectic city it calls home. With 84 guest rooms the hotel is barely boutique, but attentive staff offer a service that feels personalised. Rooms are chic and contemporary; the modern interiors are punctuated with vintage pieces like a Roberts radio and retro dial phone. The hotel offers a range of rooms from a small interior double to the spacious Grand Glamour Suite, complete with a living area. For a happy medium, book a Charming Deluxe room, many of which boast a pretty balcony with city views. Downstairs the hotel has a brasserie and bar; the brasserie does a great lunch service which offers modern takes on classic Portuguese cuisine. It doesn't open for dinner but there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and hotel staff will happily give you recommendations for the best places to eat. Check what's on at the bohemian hotel bar since it often hosts live music nights and comedy; the cocktails are great, too. A stylish, contemporary city break.

Brown's Central Hotel

In the narrow streets of lower Lisbon which run down to the wide Tagus River, this 18th-century building, with its pistachio green façade, offers 84 rooms and a buzzy bar and brasserie. Frequent art exhibitions, live performances, talks and pop-ups make this as popular with locals as with visitors.
