Hotel Review

Surrounded by acres of elegant, manicured gardens, rolling countryside and the River Thames, Cliveden House is arguably one of Britain’s grandest country hotels. It boasts a fascinating history filled with power, politics and parties; and has hosted everyone from Chaplin to Churchill to Meghan Markle, who stayed there the night before her wedding to Prince Harry. Despite its obvious opulence, Cliveden isn’t snobby and hotel guests can expect to enjoy a relaxed, even casual vibe. Highlights include the spacious rooms which feel more like private bedrooms; with traditional furnishings, enormous marble baths and the most comfortable beds and luxurious sheets that our Hotel Guru writer has ever had the pleasure of sleeping on. Other stand-out features include the hotel’s Library bar - overlooking the magnificent gardens and boasting the cosiest armchairs that will have you lingering longer and ordering countless cocktails – as well as the spa, which is another wonderful retreat with its indoor and outdoor pool (better in the sunshine as it was a bit chilly when our writer visited on a rainy autumn day) and relaxing treatments on offer. While Cliveden has all of the ingredients necessary for a flawless, romantic couples’ break, families are well-catered for too, with the National Trust estate being a great outdoor setting for kids to blow off steam (don’t miss the Cliveden Maze) and children permitted to use the spa’s pools and dine in the hotel’s two restaurants during specific hours.
