“A stylish yet relaxed country pub with classy rooms that has built up a great following for its food despite being off the main tourist track. It makes a good base for exploring both Northumberland and Newcastle and has stunning views south across the Tyne valley.”

Hotel Review

In the centre of the quiet hamlet of Newton, The Duke of Wellington has been a pub since the 18th century. A major refurbishment in 2010 has given it a smart makeover without losing its rustic charm. Food is clearly the focus; the airy, open-plan bar and eating areas are elegant with limed-wood tables, polished wood floors and pretty blue dining chairs. Rough stone walls and quirky cattle paintings keep the homely touch. The modern British food is served with style but without fussiness, perhaps confit leg of duck or ox cheek ragout with pasta. There’s a range of cask ales, mainly local, and a great collection of gins. Bedrooms are stylish yet inviting with a soft, countryside theme reflected in handsome feature wallpapers, wool throws, and original paintings and prints. Some rooms have exposed beams; all have elegant, cottagey furnishings while White Company toiletries give rooms a touch of class. Walkers and cyclists are welcome, with secure bicycle storage and drying facilities. Maps showing walks from the pub are available while Hadrian’s Wall walkers on the eastern sections can be collected and dropped off for no charge. Wonderfully peaceful, yet only five minutes from the A69 Newcastle-to-Carlisle road. You could spend all day, idling on the south-facing terrace enjoying the views across the valley.
