This is the latest in a wave of new hotels challenging the notion that Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe, is only about high-rise apartments. The affordably luxurious Fahrenheit Seven is a complete refurbishment of the unprepossessing Mercure. Now a cheerfully decorated ski-in/ski-out four-star with décor inspired by the Seventies – the decade of Val Thorens’ birth – rooms feature a youthful mix of bright colours combined with vintage prints.

Bang on the slopes, this hip design-led hotel draws style hounds and serious skiers to Europe's highest resort. Slide off-piste and into a vin chaud in a trio of Seventies-style aprés bars, or dine on the terrace in view of the magnificent, snow-draped peaks of the Tarentaise Valley.
