“An atmospheric pub-with-rooms in the heart of the city, opposite York Minster and walking distance to the sights. Darkly cosy, with gas-lit bar and dining-room, bedrooms are elegantly simple with well-worn antiques, some with four-poster beds, plus there's hearty food and real ales.”

Hotel review

If you want to stay somewhere with a real sense of the city's history, you won't do much better. Stepping distance from the Minster - eye-level with some of the bedrooms - it's not only on one of the city's most historic streets but also on the site where the infamous 16th-century, Gundpowder-plotter, Guy Fawkes was born. Part of a Georgian terrace, it has preserved its historic feel with a bar, snug and dining-room cosy with ancient floorboards, dark walls and gas-lamps providing some of the low-level lighting. Creaky stairs lead to bedrooms that, again, aim to capture the historic atmosphere without going overboard with clutter. You'll find dark-wood floors, walls painted Georgian red or green, cast-iron or four-poster beds and a careful scattering of well-worn antiques. The feeling is simple and elegant. Some rooms have original wood panelling or fireplaces, two have roll-top baths, while four are across the small rear courtyard; the latter a nice place for summer drinks. The top-floor Belfry Suite is romantic with low beams and, like the front-facing rooms, has enviable views of the Minster. The downside is that you can't escape the Minster's bells! Smart pub food is offered in the intimate dining room, lit with candles even at breakfast. And there's a good range of locally brewed, cask ales in the bar. A great spot whether for romantics, history-lovers or anyone who loves a traditional inn.
