This boutique property, hidden away down a backstreet, is a small but idyllic haven in this often sweltering city. The main building, reminiscent of a Burmese monastery, is set in verdant gardens, with flowers, palm trees, stone sculptures and a swimming pool. The tinkling of a waterfall and lily-filled stream block out the city din. There’s a cave-like underground spa, where you can enjoy treatments to the sound of birdsong, while inhaling aromas of incense. All of the four room categories (named after ethnic groups – Shan, Chin, Kachin and Rakhine) ooze comfort (flat-screen TVs, iPod docking systems, minibars) and are full of quirks such as wooden hand-shaped fruit bowls, antique-style teak furnishings, embroidered puppets and traditional tribal bags on the walls. The bathrooms have chic black-marble surfaces and a large bathtub surrounded by pebbles, and some rooms have an outdoor rainforest shower, too, so you can wash under the stars. Spice Garden Restaurant serves top-notch grub under ruby-red parasols and the breakfast is superb – freshly baked croissants, Scotch pancakes, poached eggs (cooked to perfection) and a real cappuccino (hard to find) served with ‘nut mug’, cinnamon and chocolate powder. The best bit? The complimentary poolside cocktails between 6pm and 7pm every evening.
