Right by the marketplace and South harbour, a few minutes’ walk from Helsinki’s main shopping street the Esplanade, Hotel F6 is close to the action, but set back from any bustle (Finland’s sparsely populated, so there’s relatively little to start with). Some Standard rooms feature French balconies facing the courtyard, in which a greenhouse grows herbs for cocktail bar Runar. Deluxe rooms exceed expectations in terms of size, with supremely comfortable double beds, high quality sofas and rugs, and spoiling Rituals bath products. Breakfast is a buffet spread of organic Finnish delicacies, eaten in the open courtyard during summer. Common areas are full of punky artwork, stacks of books and chess sets, against a backdrop of fantastical wallpaper. A gym is available any time of day with a cross trainer, treadmills, and free weights, but if you prefer to exercise outside, borrow a free bike. Small setbacks have handy solutions: a nearby tram stop mitigates the lack of parking, and while there’s not a dedicated restaurant, the Wolt delivery service brings food from hundreds of restaurants.
