L’Hotel Marrakech, Jasper Conran’s first foray as a hotelier, opened in 2016 in the central part of a 19th-century Caidal palace. Passing through a large studded door, a smartly white-clad member of staff guides visitors into a luxuriant jungle-like garden with a pool and sun loungers. On arrival, passing a chic Art Deco bar, guests are led to an antique-filled salon, where mint tea is served with sweet edibles. Run like a discreet private home, there are no keys to the six indulgently spacious suites within the labyrinthine walls of the building. Romantic apartment-size rooms that feel cocooning, are festooned with white Egyptian voile draped around an emperor or king-size four-poster bed. Bathrooms are equally commodious with generous roll top bath, huge sink and shower. A nostalgic feel of elegance pervades the air, harking back to the 1930s. Suites either have a private terrace or courtyard garden, a walk-in wardrobe or a private sundeck and dipping pool. Beautifully lit at night by lanterns, guests can enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner on the roof terrace beside a roaring fire or eat in privacy on their own terrace. Staff are friendly and attentive.

Jasper Conran’s 19th-century riad is a haven of effortless good taste. Its extravagant green garden and art-filled suites channel the same soignée glamour as the 1942 film, Casablanca.
