Hotel Review
Edinburgh’s Malmaison is quite obviously the chosen second home of The Young Professional. There are a lot of people busy team building over their macchiatos in Buddy Holly specs with large computer bags slung across their shoulders. But this clientele gives the place a lively, edgy feel that is refreshingly far removed from Edinburgh’s usual Scottish Widows pinstripe-suited types! This is of course because the hotel is down in Leith and not in the Georgian New Town, but there is a lot to recommend the area – The Royal Yacht Britannia is moored up nearby, Edinburgh’s only Michelin-starred restaurant The Kitchen is a short walk away, along with many other excellent seafood restaurants and bars along the Water of Leith where you can sit out if the sun is shining (rare) – and perhaps most important of all, you can park easily which for Edinburgh is something of a miracle. The solid Scottish Baronial building and characteristic Malmaison contemporary interior work reasonably well in tandem but there are some drawbacks – dark rather claustrophobic corridors with stairs in funny places and a rather airless feel. All in all however this is a perfect hotel for a business trip or simply a couple of night’s escape - there are some great room deals to be had here on a Sunday night with dinner in the busy bistro.
