Hotel Review
Family-owned since 1906, when the estate was given as a christening present to the current owner’s grandmother, Quinta de la Rosa first opened its doors to tourism in the 1980’s and has evolved ever since to now having 21 charming rooms dotted over the steeply terraced hill, with steps throughout the gardens to connect the different rooms and suites and the original farmhouse. Decorated in a mix of Portuguese and English antiques with wooden floors and white wooden shutters, the lower rooms have balconies overlooking the river. On the higher levels, the rooms are more contemporary in feel, bolder in colours and some of the larger ones are spread over two floors. Many of the bedrooms, which are mainly shower only, are named after the female members of the owning family. Comfortable rather than cutting edge, rooms here are about being immersed in the rhythms of a working vineyard and winery; for example, don’t expect television in your room.
The restaurant, called Cozinha da Clara, in homage to the owner’s grandmother who was famous for her love of food, was designed to draw on the local elements of schist and wood. It opened in the summer of 2017 with talented chef Pedro Cardoso at the helm. Ingredients are sourced from the Quinta’s own vegetable garden and local farms, with Pedro interpreting regional Portuguese dishes anew, such as the crispy sardine samosas with pepper jam. A set menu is available every evening at a shared table for individual travellers, called Claire’s table. Wine pairing menus with Quinta de la Rosa wine and tastings at the winery are available at lunchtime.
