“The Anchor Inn is a traditional pub located in prime shooting and fishing country. Full of character with books, pictures, nostalgic bric a brac and WW1 poet themed rooms. Featuring eccentricities such as wooden galleries & quaint private balconies each room is unique. A wonderful country escape.”

Hotel review

The Anchor Inn lies on the river Wey, near Alton, in stunning Hampshire countryside, yet is less than one hour from London either by car or by train from nearby Bentley railway station. This recently converted inn retains original features (mind the padded low beams!) yet has added soft, period furnishings to give the feel of a bygone age. Check in is at the bar. Bedrooms are filled with books and photographs of great Britons who have made a lasting impression and still impact our lives today. Downstairs public rooms are adorned with school photographs from Charterhouse, reflecting the past owner’s alma mater. Rooms come with en suite showers, luxurious beds, pillows and duvets, flat screen TVs with DVD, WIFI and writing desks. They are named after World War 1 poets – Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, Robert Graves, Richard Hilary and Rupert Brook. Cuisine, under the supervision of chef Sam May, has been awarded two AA Rosettes and is elegant British in flavour. The Inn can arrange fly fishing on a number of nearby chalk stream rivers, game or clay shooting and welcomes huntsmen and walkers.
