It's impossible to miss this building as you walk into the city from the station; the headquarters of the former North Eastern Railway Company, it was built to reflect the company's wealth, a towering block of red-brick and handsome stonework. Transformed into a hotel in 2010, original features of parquet flooring, decorative plasterwork, heavy-duty panelled doors and magnificently wide corridors form the background to a modern colour scheme of charcoal and purple. Bedrooms are spread between the original building and an annexed 1970s office block. All are ridiculously large, with modern clean-lined furniture and well thought-out design but unfortunately rather corporate and bland in feel. Service is five-star, with staff appearing just when you need them, and happy to help with any request. There's also a spa in the original vaults, and a whisky lounge with some 100 to work your way through. Food is in the Rise Restaurant which has been awarded one AA Rosette and serves modern British cuisine.
