If you want a calm respite from full-on central Manhattan, The Penny, which opened in the Uber-cool Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn in the summer of 2022, is perfect. Named after ‘a small dog with a big personality’, the hotel is peppered throughout with colourful contemporary artworks sourced from two local non-profit organisations. The bedrooms are modelled on a swish modern Brooklyn apartment, each boasting a kitchenette and contemporary decor and furnishings. They have bursts of colour, from artworks and pretty rugs, to cushions and bed throws. There’s a very welcome peaceful courtyard and stylish rooftop bar and restaurant elNico offers wonderful views of the skyline accompannied by great cocktails and Mexican dishes.
