Hotel review

If you have stayed at a Pig hotel before, you won’t be disappointed here. The trademark reference points have all been successfully incorporated - a 450 year old Elizabethan manor house turned country house hotel. The decor is quirky, comfy, and embodies traditional country chic, but in a laid back fashion, you are here to enjoy yourself and relax, no need to sit bolt upright and speak in hushed tones. The food is sourced from a range of no more than 25 miles with much grown on site in three walled kitchen gardens. There is the usual Potting Shed spa with treatment rooms for a variety of pampering treatments, and the gardens have been landscaped to provide a relaxed environment strewn in the summer with (carefully positioned) deck chairs for soaking up the Devon countryside - possibly with a glass of something chilled in hand! The public areas are stunning: what was once the manor house's great hall has been reimagined to provide a glamorous bar area with super comfy sofas and original wood panelled walls, the restaurant is located in a beautiful conservatory-style room for food with a view and the potting shed treatment rooms have been created from (what else?) actual potting sheds! Bedrooms, all different shapes and sizes, in the main house, in the stable yard and in charming estate workers cottages away down the drive for added privacy, are country house smart, many with super-king four-poster beds, freestanding baths and monsoon showers. The attention to detail throughout and young, friendly and ‘nothing is too much trouble’ staff are all superb. Away from The Pig at Combe, activities abound from Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast, to a plethora of recommended pubs and restaurants within a 20 mile radius.
