The best aspect of Porto’s beauty is from across the Douro River, in Vila Nova de Gaia. By facing Porto rather than being in it, The Rebello has all the advantages of the city; proximity to fantastic restaurants, venues, and shops, with the added bonus of quietness and simplicity. Instead of traffic, the sounds are of fishermen fixing their boats and untangling nets right under the terraces of the river-facing suites.
Inside, the Rebello is modern and spacious, making use of Gaia’s working-class heritage. Housed within four 19th century industrial buildings, including a wine cellar and a utensil factory, the themes of wood, water, and industry run through the décor and features. The reception area, which is made of wood recycled from rabelo boats (the vessels that once brought wine to Vila Nova do Gaia from the vineyards upriver), is light and airy, while the Roman-inspired spa has a subterranean feel.
Elsewhere, the Rebello has the feel of a residence building. The rooms are designed like flats—studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom—and come with balconies, living areas, and kitchens stocked with Portuguese-made products, from wine and beer, to crackers, chocolates, and baked goods.
For those wanting to dine in, food and drinks can be had at the lobby café, the rooftop bar, or the ground floor Pot&Pan restaurant, where the fare is traditional Portuguese dishes. Plates of local sardines and octopus, beef from the northern mountains, and feijoada from the country’s central region are “too big for one, too small for two.
Access to Porto is either via the Luís I Bridge, a 15 minute walk up river from the Rebello or there is a river taxi, about halfway along the same route.
