“Genteel 19th-century inn with an aristocratic pedigree set above Cullen's harbour. Choose from chic stylish rooms and spacious modern cottages which sleep up to eight and boast sleek kitchens. Expect hearty Scottish cuisine and an impressive whisky and gin collection. Suits families or couples.”

Hotel review

Quite a lot of money has been spent on this old beauty since The Seafield Arms came under new ownership and re-opened in 2019 after several years in the doldrums. It shows – but in a tastefully restrained way. Outside, the douce Georgian building in the centre of Cullen looks much the same as it has done since it was built in 1822 for the Earl of Seafield. Inside, a softly carpeted corridor opens onto the Bar 19 bistro restaurant and breakfast room, and the town's legendary 'Cullen skink' (Scotland's answer to chowder) is of course on the menu. At the rear, the Findlater Lounge with its original hand-sculpted fireplace offers discerning sippers more than 70 malt whiskies and 50 artisan gins. Upstairs, bedrooms are decorated in creamy tones, with velvet armchairs and large bathrooms featuring free-standing roll-top baths as well as showers. For antique shoppers and architectural salvage fans, the Cullen Antiques Centre is next door. The famous CullenIce Cream Shop, noted for its home-made ice cream, is just across the road.
