Welcoming guests since the 17th century, The Sun Hotel is a 16-bedroom four-star boutique hotel right in the centre of Lancaster. The rooms range from compact (and very good value) standard rooms to spacious high-ceilinged suites, all of which are comfortable and airy with big windows and neutral-coloured furnishings. Unfortunately for some, there isn’t a lift. Breakfasts are hearty and leisurely late mornings aren’t frowned upon, with service continuing until 11am at weekends. There’s a courtyard for the summer and the stone-walled bar provides a cosy spot in winter, which Turner, Charles Dickens and allegedly Bonnie Prince Charlie all frequented in the past. The hotel’s position makes it an ideal base for exploring both Lancaster and the surrounding countryside.
