Hotel Review

Set in over 2500 acres of native forest and game reserve, with seven trout streams and four lakes, Treetops Lodge and Estate is the brainchild of owner and naturalist John Sax. The Lodge is set in the midst of an eco-forest, over 70,000 trees planted to restore the landscape to its original harmony, a successful project that has seen the re-emergence of an abundance of native plants, animals and birds on the property. The Lodge architecture is in harmony with the great surrounding outdoors, and inside there are open fireplaces, finishes of timber and stone and local art on the walls. There’s a choice of four accommodation types, ranging from the Villa rooms to the Pheasant Cottage sleeping up to eight people with a full kitchen, dining and living area. Take time to learn about the local Maori culture on a guided walk, or try an authentic style of Maori treatment and healing using natural, locally sourced ingredients at the opulent spa. For the more adventurous, you can hunt wild deer, pigs and pheasants on the property, or go water-rafting in the Tongariro National Park (where you can also ski in the winter). This is a family-friendly place, with the Lodge Wing particularly geared up for all ages, there are special kids activity packages available to keep the young ones busy all day. There’s an organic vegetable garden and orchard too, the produce of which is used by the chefs to prepare sumptuous meals. A luxurious sanctuary in an outstanding location.
