Tumsong Tea Retreat

Very off the beaten track (the driveway alone is a feat to get up and down) this working tea plantation affords total isolation from touristy Darjeeling. The former residence of a German tea plantation owner Tumsong is a blend of European charm and Indian hospitality. Upon arrival guests are greeted with a pot of steaming Darjeeling or “orthodox” tea as they call it here, and hot pakoras. Rooms are large with polished wooden floors, antique furnishings and unspoilt views out across the plantations. Bathrooms on the other hand, whilst clean and of a good size could do with some updating: you have to wait between showers for the hot water to reheat! The food is a real treat and a merciful break from the usual heavy hotel fair. Home-cooked, locally sourced dishes are prepared with love as per guest preferences and served in the large dining room. There is a pleasant verandah where guests can relax with a good book and yet more tea, taking in the views of the valley below. With plenty of walks directly from the property, early bird-watching excursions, as well as Ghoom monastery and toy-train close by – there is enough to keep you busy. Not one for those who crave the clamour of city life but rather for the traveller simply wanting to get away from it all. A delightful option to visit, especially during the months of April and May when you can see the tea being picked.
