“Tucked away in the Madikeri hills, set amid 180 acres of rainforest this property enjoys stunning views. Huge rooms are modern in style with dark woods, clean lines and floor to ceiling windows making the most of the amazing scenery. There are three restaurants, two pools and an award winning spa. ”

Hotel review

As you walk in to the reception area you are greeted by a panoramic view of the Madikeri hills. In fact, built on a hillock, this property really makes the most of its impressive landscapes. The rooms are minimal but beautifully decorated using local woods and beamed ceilings. The Luxury Bliss Villas have a private indoor pool as well as balconies, living and dining area, plus complimentary yoga classes and in room treatments. Simply stunning, despite the higher price tag they are our favourite by a mile. All rooms have large, deep baths and rainfall showers. This is a resort, not a hotel and with the amount of activities on offer you will find it difficult to leave. Enjoy candle-lit dinners at the Fern Tree restaurant (one of three), and while away an afternoon by their infinity pool with a view. There are also daily guided walks and cycles as well as art classes. Coorg, known as "The Scotland of India" is one of the few places in the country you can visit all year round. Whilst the rest of India is scorching, Coorg remains under 30 degrees so you can enjoy an off-season romantic or spa break. Off the beaten track, this property is a hidden gem, perfect for those who have visited India before and are looking for something different.

The Hot List 2013: Vivanta by Taj, Madikeri, Coorg

The panoramic views of the Western Ghats from this mountain retreat, 1,200 metres above sea level, are staggering. Getting here takes six hours by car from Bangalore, via historic Mysore; the last couple of hours, through coffee and cardamom plantations, are gloriously scenic.
