Pichilemu is a coastal city in central Chile, home to some 13,000 people. Originally founded by the politician and newspaper magnate Augustin Ross Edwards as a summer retreat for the elite of Santiago, Pichilemu is now primarily famous for its long stretches of dark sands and as South America’s premier surfing/windsurfing resort. It is an interesting combination of traditional fishing village and hip surfing mecca. The city is growing rapidly and the demographic is truly cosmopolitan. The best places to stay in Pichilemu offer easy access to all this buzzing city has to offer.
In April and May there is a major surf contest on the beaches at Punta de Lobos. The season is all year round. As a result, the city is vibrant and full of a young colourful crowd. In September every year there is the Fiestas Patrias - Chile's answer to America's July 4th - and Pichilemu is renowned for its celebrations.
Pichilemu is also home to five of Chile’s national monuments; the Augustin Ross centre and park, the wooden railway station, the El Arbol tunnel and the Caballo de Agua.
For those looking for a beach-style holiday, the best months to visit are between November and March when daily temperatures rise to around thirty degrees celcius and there is little rain.
