About Guayaquil
On the South West Coast of Ecuador, Guayaquil is generally known as the gateway to the Galapagos. However, this port city has much to offer in its own right. Its water front promenade, colourful houses and art galleries are all worth visiting and to help you take it all in, we’ve selected the best places to stay in Guayaquil.
The city has a long, rich and sometimes rough history. It has been invaded by the Spanish, the Peruvians and both English and French pirates. Guayaquil is also the largest city in the country so monuments to its heritage are numerous.
Being Ecuador, temperatures are relatively stable year round and hover around the mid-twenties. If you’re not a fan of rain, aim to avoid January to March.
Things you shouldn't miss:
-
Las Penas - Visit the colourful neighbourhood to soak up the culture at your own pace, and why not visit some of the local cafes whilst you're there!
-
Parque Historico - A great place for a relaxing day exploring the history of the city and meeting some of the local animals. Very close to the centre of the town and free to enter (donations appreciated!).
-
Churute Mangroves Ecological Reserve - A short trip out of the city, go to explore the local fauna and flora deep within the 50,000 hectares of mangroves. Also a renowned area for bird spotting. Do remember to take plenty of mosquito spray though, they love visitors!
-
Malecon 2000 - Stretching along the Rio Guayas coastline, the boardwalk is packed with small food stands, great cafes and a fantastic blend of historic and modern buildings.
