Often a mere day-long stop for visitors from the larger hubs of Avignon or Nîmes, Orange is a fascinating destination in its own right, and we think it’s well worth spending a few days in this pretty part of Provence. An ancient Roman city, Orange boasts two World Heritage-listed sites, as well as a plethora of mature vineyards — perfect for food and wine lovers. Accommodation options range from charming B&Bs to imposing historic châteaux, well-suited to couples, friends or families.
Visitors drawn to Orange for its Roman ruins can delight in admiring with the Théâtre Antique — one of the best preserved Roman monuments of the ancient world — and the Arc de Triomphe. Bedecked with intricate carvings recounting Augustus’ conquests over the Gauls, the arch also remains in excellent repair. Travel during the Chorégies d'Orange Festival to see the theatre at its best: filled with crowds of 10,000 people, soaking up live operatic performances. For further Roman treasures excavated in the region, tour the Musée d'Orange. Adventurous types can look out for historic landmarks whilst following the cycling and hiking trails which wind their way through the countryside, and clamber up the Colline Saint-Europe for magnificent views.
Orange’s other big draw is its vineyards, some of which were originally cultivated by the Romans. A combination of the region's stony ground and abundant sunshine ensures long, warm evenings, well-suited to the growing of flavoursome, full-bodied grapes. Enjoy tours and tastings at world-class Côte du Rhone wineries, including the Vignobles Alain Jaume, Château Maucoil and Domaine de la Palud. You’ll find that the best places to stay in Orange fill up fast during the summer months and over the autumn harvest, so book your trip well in advance!
