Just 25km from Strasbourg, Offenburg sits in the Kinzi River valley, at the western edge of the Black Forest. Capital of the Ortenau wine region in Baden-Württemburg, the city is famed for its wonderful weather and its wine production, and has long been a regional foodie favourite. There are a growing number of lovely hotels and B&Bs in the area, too. Our Gurus’ pick of the best places to stay in Offenburg is a chic design hotel with a very unusual past.
Guided tours of Offenburg’s pedestrianised centre are enormously rewarding: this is a city rich in history. Amble around town to admire striking baroque buildings including the former Königshof, the 1741-built town hall and the painstakingly rebuilt Hotel Sonne, which was the oldest in town before being destroyed by fire in 1689. The old town walls which once protected Offenburg are now bordered by leafy parks, including the Bürgerpark and the Zwingerpark. Both are particularly impressive in the spring, when filled with flowers.
Tours and tastings at the Ortenau wineries which surround Offenburg are fantastic. Ramble, cycle or horse ride between picturesque vineyards, or take scenic boat trips and kayaking excursions on the Kinzi River. There are some excellent gourmet restaurants in the vicinity, too; including at the best place to stay in Offenburg.

Offenburg
A luxurious design hotel near Europa-Park, offering a chic, contemporary vibe in what was once a prison. Many rooms feature original vaulted ceilings, exposed brickwork and free-standing bathtubs. The restaurant serves dishes cooked on the open fire. Super-chic and very hip.
