About Aurangabad

This city takes its name from the last Mughal, Aurangzeb, who made it his capital, and embellished it with impressive monuments and architecture. Unfortunately following his death, the city fell into decline. However its proximity to Mumbai, just a weekend trip away, and the World Heritage sights of Ellora and Ajanta, mean that a steady flow of tourists still come here. Our pick of the best places to stay in Aurangabad are all ideally located for exploring all of its attractions.

With the unfortunate nickname of “the poor man’s Taj”, Bibi-qa-Maqbara is a mausoleum built by the great Aurangzeb’s son, Azam Khan, for his mother. Whilst it may not be quite as grand as its bigger brother it is still worth a visit, even if just to perambulate its impressive formal gardens.

But what the punters really come here for are the Ellora and Ajanta caves. Just 29 and 105 kilometres from Aurangabad, respectively, they are best reached by car. Once there, visitors are transported into an ancient world, today World Heritage Sights.

Our pick of the best places to stay in Aurangabad offer excellent value for money and stylish accommodation for all tastes.
