About Castellabate

Castellabate is one of the largest centres on the coastline of the Cilento National Park; it’s beautiful and protected from mass growth and tourism by its national park status, and the UNESCO World Heritage listing of its medieval centre. From the best viewpoints in Castellabate you can see the whole of the brilliant blue gulf. and into the green hills behind the towns. We say towns, because Castellabate encompasses Santa Maria di Castellabate — close to the beach — San Marco di Castellabate, and Ogliasto Marina, which spread out along the bay. For our Gurus, choosing the best places to stay in Castellabate has a lot to do with the views, either into the bay, or the national park.

Castellabate’s medieval centre, is easily the most charming part of area; this is the bit on the hilltop, a captivating collection of ancient alleyways, pedestrianised lanes, steep steps, and tiny piazzas, all surrounded by the original protective walls.

The sandy coastline of golden beaches, backed only by low-rise buildings with cheery red-roofs, is perfect for a seaside holiday. The promenade is lined with fantastic seafood restaurants, gelaterias, and friendly bars, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. If you’re looking for a family beach holiday destination in Italy, the best places to stay in Castellabate are definitely worth considering.

The Best Places to Stay in Castellabate

For Families

  • The Palazzo Belmonte is a large and historic stone villa, set in a beautiful five acre bark, just along the coast from Castellabate. Accommodation in the palazzo includes rooms, and suites, and there are small and large villas on the grounds nearby, so this is an excellent pick for families or groups. The decor is creamy, making the most of huge windows and rustic original terracotta floor tiles. Our  favourite rooms are those with sea-facing balconies. The restaurant specialises in Mediterranean cuisine, and there are lovely, relaxed terraces and courtyards to feel secluded in, or dine romantically in. There’s also a private beach, which is sandy, and ideal for children.

The warmest summer months are the busiest time for visitors, but if you’re not restricted on when you travel, and you’re interested in seeing this region’s historic treasures, like Paestum, Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as its beautiful beaches, then it might be more enjoyable to visit between April and mid-June, or September through mid-October. If you’re here to explore the Cilento National Park you may also want to plan your visit away from the very hottest months. Even during winter, Castellabate gets close to eight hours of sunshine a day.
