About Favignana

Favignana is one of three spectacularly beautiful islands, the Egadi group, on the west coast of Sicily. Dry, rocky, dusty and tiny, Favignana has one of the most spectacularly blue coastlines on the planet, and it’s for this reason that the impressive architecture has been built here, and that farms producing delicious food and wine have been founded here. During its busiest season the accommodation options on Favignana are booked up solidly, some a year in advance, but these idyllic hotels and villas are still magical escapes from the rest of the world. All our Gurus’ picks for the best places to stay on Favignana are fairly small, and surrounded by views. However conveniently they’re located, they all feel like an escape, whether they’re converted farmhouses, eco-resorts, beach villas or guesthouses.

There’s an argument to say that these wonderfully regenerating properties are at their best when Favignana is at its busiest, because even when the ferries from Trapani are full and one has to be creative with towel layout on the island’s many beaches, visitors who’re staying overnight get to experience the calm after the last ferry leaves. But Favignana is a pleasure at the beginning and the end of the season too, at which point it’s easier to get a table in one of the island’s best restaurants. Sustained by tuna fishing for many decades, Favignana has had to adjust to tourism taking over as the main industry, and that has meant a smaller year-round population, but a fantastic explosion in hospitality.

As well as luxurious trimmings and rustic chic style, Favignana still offers a wealth of natural wonders. Its spectacular coastline is a playground for sealife, and much loved by divers and snorkellers, and if you want to take photos of more than just the coast, there are some impressive ancient forts and palazzos.

As we mentioned above, finding a room in one of the best places to stay in Favignana is like gold dust during the peak summer months. So try to book well ahead to avoid disappointment.

The Best Paces to Stay in Favignana

For an Island Escape

  • I Pretti Resort is certainly a pretty resort, and a rather peaceful-feeling one, converted from a long, low building, with elegant enclosed terraces, arched doorways and impressive pillars. The 16 rooms and suites benefit from the building’s original features too, with tiled and stone floors, vaulted ceilings and natural light. Each of the rooms has its own living space too. The resort is linked to a beautiful beach but a garden-lined path-away, and it smells lovely! Breakfast is served in the garden too.

For Relaxation

  • Dimora dell'Olivastro is the eco-friendly accommodation of your dreams. Absolutely gorgeous, and in no way missing anything in the way of luxury or comfort, yet almost entirely self sufficient, due to its own vineyards, olive groves and 32 acre organic farm. There are just six rooms in the villa, decorated with a minimalist style and a colour scheme that lets the outside in. Each room has a private terrace, and some even have an additional outdoor bed out there, or a private plunge pool. Explore the island by boat, car, bike or scooter — the hotel will arrange it all for you, as well as laying on a delicious breakfast using their own produce. Adults only, and no TVs in the rooms — they really want you to escape.

For Families

  • Il Baglio sull Acqua is a ten room hotel converted from a charming old stone building just a short stroll from the beach. Olive groves and low-lying vegetation are the only things between you and the sea, except for the impressive hotel pool and hot tub! The decor is smart and simple, with black and white tiled floors and a minimal approach to detail. The bistro is known for its local specialities, and sunset views. And the family suites are a good size.

For Romantics

  • Dimora Cala del Pozzo is an idyllically located, and beautifully converted, farmhouse within a few hundred, unobstructed metres, of the sea. The building’s original charms, its warm apricot stone, beamed or vaulted ceilings, and tiled or stone floors, have been harmoniously adapted, so that the windows are now huge — framing views of all sides — the bathrooms contemporary, and the decor a minimal rustic chic that interiors magazine editors would fawn over. The farm is still working, providing organic food for the hotel’s restaurant, and for your candle-lit meal under the stars, and for your morning breakfast in the sunshine. Romantically off grid, but beautiful with it.

Travel Information

  • Most people arrive on Favignana on the ferry, departing from Trapani, on Sicily. There are plenty of ways to Trapani, but one of the most obvious is by plane, because Palermo Airport is only about an hour away by car, or about three hours by public transport.
  • If you plan to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Spring, or March through June, is one of our favourite times to visit Favignana, because the weather is sunny and mild, and the tourist season hasn’t reached full swing. July and August are hot, and popular, though there’s a limit to how many visitors are able to stay overnight on Favignana, and that means there’s a calm spell after the last ferry leaves for mainland Sicily — even on the busiest days. Visitor numbers start to tail off in September, but this is still a great time to visit — although the Sirocco winds do sometimes bring rain. October is also a good month to consider, especially if you’re interested in exploring the island and getting some peace and quiet.
