About Pordenone

Pordenone is probably an unfamiliar name to many, but Prosecco probably isn’t! And this is one of the towns around which the prosecco grapes are grown. It is set within a region of lush, rounded valleys and rocky peaks cast through with bright blue river gorges, just to the south of the Venetian Alps, in the foothills of Friuli, and on the Veneto border. Around Pordenone are unusual luna-like expanses of gravel and pebbles, which may have something to do with the area’s successful wine production. Although you'll find all the usual suspects accommodation wise, including B&Bs and more run-of-the-mill hotels, our pick of the best places to stay in Pordenone is a charming historic mill just out of town.

Pordenone is a good destinaion for fans of picturesque Italian towns, complete with graceful bridges, medieval centres, and a collection of notable architecture. In this case there’s a Roman-Gothic cathedral with fantastic frescoes and a famed bell tower; a Gothic town hall with an astronomical clock; a city museum housed in a historic Venetian style palazzo; a vast and elegant municipal park; and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Pordenone’s pedestrianised central street, lined with an almost unbroken chain of covered portico, and a great place to stroll, shop and drink prosecco.

During September, Pordenone hosts PordenoneLegge, a large book festival, and there’s also an annual silent film festival, and a blues festival. For something a bit different, visit PAFF! a museum dedicated to comic books and illustration, housed in a gorgeous villa in the Galvani Park.

This is wine country and if you plan to visit the area during harvest time you'll need to plan ahead; the best places to stay in Pordenone will be extremely busy!

  • Pordenone is at its best during the warmer, sunnier months of the Italian summer. It’s not as busy as other parts of Italy, because it’s not as touristy, but it still gets its fair share of extra attention come June, July and August. September and October are popular with wine lovers and foodies, and April and May are popular with walkers and those exploring the Dolomites, national parks, or just the Italian countryside outside of school holidays!
