A busy small city in Japan's striking Yamanashi region, Hokuto makes for a wonderful year-round holiday destination. Keen skiers will delight in zooming down the slopes of Mount Yatsugatake during the winter months, whilst more laid-back visitors can admire the spring cherry blossoms, or unwind in natural hot springs. The region’s accommodation options include simple, self-catering cottages as well as smart hotels, well-suited to trips as a couple or with family and friends. Our pick of the best places to stay in Hokuto is a family favourite, perfect for an active holiday at any time of year.
The Hokuto region is a particular favourite amongst hikers. Follow the ancient Shingen Bomichi road, trek up Mount Mizugaki, or challenge yourself with an ascent of Mount Yatsugatake. Doryuno Falls and Verdant Garden Verga are also well worth the walk. Marvel at the 2000-year-old Yamatake Jindaizakura Cherry Tree in spring and the sunflower-filled fields of Akeno in the summer as a family, with long picnics in the sunshine.
Head into the city for guided walking tours, visit the Misogi Shrine, or retreat to one of the best places to stay in Hokuto for a blissful natural hot spring bath. Evenings are for tucking in to delicious Japanese cuisine and soaking up the magical tranquility of the mountains.
