About Miyajima

Stunning, secluded and studded with heritage sites, Miyajima is a real gem. Just an hour from Hiroshima on the Seto Inland Sea, this little island has long been a sacred site of spiritual significance. Visitors from Japan and further afield will find a great selection of accommodation options to choose from, with our list of the best places to stay in Miyajima highlighting everything from simple ryokans to luxury hotels.

Although officially named Itsukushima Island, the area is most often called ‘Miyajima’ — meaning ‘Shrine Island’ — and is known for its UNESCO Heritage sites. The famed Itsukushima Shrine, for example, dates back to 593; its iconic red gate appears to float in the sea at high tide. Other key attractions include 9th-century Daishō-in, the Five Storey Pagoda and the fascinating Museum of History and Folklore. Keen shoppers will adore Omotosando Street, where you can pick up souvenirs and taste local delicacies from boutiques and eateries aplenty.

535-metre tall Mount Misen, on the other hand, is perfect for scenic hikes, as are trails in the surrounding hills. Many of the best places to stay in Miyajima boast relaxing traditional onsens for unwinding in absolute bliss.
