About Tokyo

One of the world’s most famously complex destinations, Tokyo has a unique appeal. Japan’s historic capital is at once a place of ancient tradition, and a hip, design-focused city with a world-class foodie scene, epic nightlife and arts aplenty. The city’s accommodation options are the perfect example of this: you’ll find everything from classic family-owned ryokans to elegant boutique hotels, modern business hotels and slick skyscrapers. Finding a balance when visiting can be a challenge; our list of the best places to stay in Tokyo is the perfect starting point.

Some of our Tokyo collections:

For many, the question of where to stay in the city will be closely linked to what you hope to see and do over the course of your visit. To base yourself in the heart of the action, look at hotels near Tokyo Station, or the bright, neon lights of Shinjuku and youthful Shibuya. All are brilliant for top restaurants, designer shopping and a late-night buzz. Set atop reclaimed marshlands and close to the famous Tsukiji Fish Markets, modern Shiodome is home to some of our top spots. If you’re dreaming of discovering old Tokyo’s multi-generational businesses, winding streets, teashops and temples, focus instead on East Tokyo, Asakusa or Nihonbashi, where this enormous city of twelve million people really started.

Tokyo’s highlights, too, are seemingly endless. The Imperial Palace, with its manicured gardens, is a real gem, as are the Edo-Tokyo Museum, The Sensō-ji Temple and the Tokyo Skytree. Don’t miss admiring the cherry blossoms at the Shinjuku Gyoen National Gardens (the season usually runs from late March to early April), participating in a traditional tea ceremony, or tasting mouth-watering cuisine at street stalls and Michelin-starred eateries alike. The best places to stay in Tokyo await!

The Best Places to Stay in Tokyo

For a Classic Ryokan

  • The Edo Sakura offers a typical Japanese guesthouse experience, with 30 rooms in a traditional Machiya townhouse in Taito. Choose a room with tatami mattings and futons, or a more modern Western bed. Daily tea ceremonies are held at 10am, and well worth watching. Friendly and quiet.
  • Onsen Ryokan Yuen Shinjuku has elegant guestrooms, with a more stylish, contemporary take on floor matting and futon beds. Rectangular windows frame views of skycrapers, and the onsen is ideal for a long soak after a day of exploring. Expect excellent Japanese food, too.
  • Cyashitu Ryokan Asakusa is made up of ten rooms with sliding screens, bamboo blinds and low beds. Gather in the lounge for sake and nibbles, or kick back in the hot tub in the evening. A designer take on the classic ryokan experience.
  • Yuen Bettei Daita invites guests to unwind in communal hot spring onsen baths (indoor & outdoor) and the soothing Sojyu Spa. Elegant rooms are compact, drawing on typical Japanese elements — tatami flooring, rock gardens and wooden furnishings — and romantic. With Tsukikage serving mouth-watering Japanese fare, this is a very special choice.

For Boutique Chic

  • Hotel K5 merges Scandi & Japanese styles in 20 hip rooms. One of Nihonbashi's trendiest boutique boltholes, this little hotel is also known for its terrific restaurant: Caveman. In addition there's a coffee shop, cocktail bar and brewery. A romantic pad in a building dating back to 1924.
  • Hotel Azabu 10 has just ten airy guestrooms with sink-into soft furnishings, lots of white-on-white textiles and free-standing tubs. Set in Minato City, it's a romantic choice for a city break. Sample Japanese fare at the highly regarded Totanuki restaurant. Adult only bliss.

For Unusual Design

  • Hoshinoya, Tokyo’s first five-star ryokan, has 84 rooms on 17 floors, each of which acts as its own luxurious guesthouse. Take a soak in a traditional onsen, feast on exceptional Japanese cuisine, savour a sophisticated tea ceremony and retreat to atmospheric rooms and suites. A wonderful experience.
  • Hotel Gajoen has 60 luxurious rooms and suites, and an acclaimed Chinese restauraunt. The big draw, however, is the adjoining historic Hyakudan Kaidan and the vast collection of Japanese pre-war artwork. One for design lovers and culture buffs.

For Families

  • MUJI Hotel Ginza is a great family choice, with split-level suites offering mutliple beds. Interiors feature pale wooden furnishings and cosy beds topped with crisp white sheets. The enormous flagship MUJI shop is in the same building: perfect for a family shopping trip.
  • The Prince Park Tower has its own karaoke bar and bowling alley, as well as an extensive choice of restauraunts and a spoiling spa. A lively, fun choice for a trip with family and friends. Well-located in Shiba Park and close to a number of cultural attractions.
  • Trunk Hotel is a trendy offering in the Shibuya district. With an emphasis on reusing and recycling, most of the matierals in the hotel have been repurposed. The vibe is fresh and funky, families will appreciate the flexible room options, and the lively bar is great for groups of friends or families with teenagers who will love the live music evenings.

For Luxury

  • The Mandarin Oriental is a swish city hotel, boasting panoramic views from its 179 elegant rooms and suites. Pick this place for the sense of timeless style, the chic bars and restaurants and the impressive spa. A gem for couples, families or business travellers.
  • Aman Tokyo has minimalist interiors designed by Kerry Hill, featuring pale wooden furnishings, slate-grey upholstery and crisp white linens. Suites are soothing and contemporary, the spa is sensational, and Venetian-trained chef Masakazu Hiraki promises some of the best Italian food in the city.
  • The Tokyo Station Hotel originally opened in 1915, a year after the station itself. Now recognised as a key cultural landmark, this opulent property has been extensively refubished to offer 150 glamorous rooms and suites. Communal spaces feature cut-glass chandeliers, sumptuous drapes and plenty of classic style. Iconic.
  • The Shangri-La Hotel will certainly not disappoint. Book one of 363 luxurious rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling windows, admire epic views, dine in style or enjoy rejuvenating treatments at the CHI Spa.
  • The Peninsula is a landmark hotel with opulent interiors fusing Japanese design with contemporary style. With nine restaurants, exceptional service, phenomenal views from rooms and the rooftop, an indoor pool and a superb spa this is a seriously special choice.

For Great Value

  • Andon Ryokan is a traditional guesthouse in a quiet neighbourhood. 24 simple rooms have roll-down futons and tatami matting, offering a taste of traditional Japanese living. A friendly, great-value choice for budget travellers. Don't miss the excellent tea ceremonies in the communal lounge.
  • Asakusa Kokono Club Hotel sits in Tokyo's Taito district, not far from the main sights. Expect smart interiors with muted tones, and a range of family rooms, doubles and dormitories. Modern and well-priced, with very good Japanese cuisine.
  • One@Tokyo is the creation of architect Kengo Kuma. Set in downtown Oshiage, East Tokyo, it's an appealingly affordable base for fans of contemporary industrial design, with plywood and concrete featuring heavily. There are epic city views from the rooftop.

FOR AN APARTMENT

  • If you'd prefer a self-catering option, we suggest that you visit our online partner Booking.com.

Travel Information

  • Fly to Haneda International Airport or to Narita International Airport and travel into the city by high-speed train or regular bus service.
  • Tokyo is best navigated by public transport, but you may want to drive if you're exploring beyond the city itself. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • This really is a year-round destination. Summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures hovering around 30°C, so we'd recommend travelling in spring — famous for its pink blossoms — or autumn. Winter in Tokyo is cold, but can be very special.
