Honey-coloured stone buildings cling to the hillside in Deià, shaded by towering pine trees and surrounded by the almond, olive and citrus groves for which the Balearic Islands have long been known. Relatively unheard of by international visitors until the English poet Robert Graves settled in town in 1929, Deià has since become a beloved refuge for artists, writers and creatives. The carefully preserved Casa Robert Graves is not to be missed, whilst the Archaeological Museum and Research Centre is fascinating. You can expect numerous galleries and boutiques, as well as a lively programme of artistic summer festivals and concerts.
Beyond Deià rise the peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana. Hike part of the 8-portion Dry Stone Route, clamber up the rocky Puig des Teix, which rises to 1062 metres, or follow pretty trails on horseback and mountain bike. Head in the opposite direction for sun-drenched shingle beaches, ocean swims and blissful days of sailing with family and friends.
