About Trujillo

A red-roofed hill town just 45 kilometres from historic Cáceres, Trujillo is nothing short of spectacular. Boasting one of the most impressive plazas in all of Spain, this is a city bursting with history, and a perfect choice for a culture-focused holiday or weekend break from Madrid. Our pick of the best places to stay in Trujillo reflects the city’s rich heritage, and is well placed for seeing the sights on foot.

Begin your explorations in Trujillo’s Plaza Major, lined with intricately decorated Renaissance and baroque buildings, many of which are topped with stone turrets and cupolas. Part of the Route of the Conquistadors, the imposing statue of Francisco Pizarro and the 16th-century Palacio de la Conquista — built for Pizarro’s brother and daughter — are long-standing reminders of the city’s connections to the New World. Amble along narrow lanes, pop into artisanal shops or soak up the sunshine at a lively café.

The golden Castillo de Trujillo sits atop the city, and promises magical views of the surrounding countryside. The castle has 10th-century Islamic origins — again offering a further insight into Extremadura's complex past. Outdoorsy adventurers should venture out into the Monfragüe National Park for scenic hikes, horse rides and mountain bike excursions, before returning to relax at one of the best places to stay in Trujillo.
