About County Fermanagh

Beautiful, atmospheric, County Fermanagh is one of the southernmost counties in Northern Ireland, entirely surrounding the shores of Lough Erne, with its border right up against the Republic of Ireland. This is a landscape of undulating hills — dotted with medieval castles, pretty villages, and pagan sacred sites. The best places to stay in County Fermanagh are popular with walkers, hikers and fishermen, with many of them surrounded by idyllic natural views. Our favourite picks are a family-friendly, lakeside resort with amazing facilities and a collection of futuristic perspex pods.

If you’re visiting County Fermanagh because you’re keen to fish the native ‘gillaroo’ trout, then you’ll want to stay close to Lough Erne, but if you’re looking for a spectacular backdrop for a walking holiday you’re spoiled for choice here. The Crom Estate is known for its wildlife, the Legnabrocky Trail is known for its magical moorlands, the West Fermanagh Scarplands are the mountainous bit, or there’s the Cuilcagh mountain range, which has Cuilcagh, the country’s highest point.

County Fermanagh has some wonderful man-made sights too, from 15th century Enniskillen castle through the Garden of Celtic Saints — a collection of incredible ancient statues — to the ruins of 17th century, Scottish-style castle, Monea and the 6th century monastery on Devilish Island. This is a little talked about destination, but a really rather magical and memorable one.

Whether you're travelling with little ones in tow, or you're looking for a romantic getaway our pick of the best places to stay in County Fermanagh tick all the right boxes!

The Best Places to Stay in County Fermanagh

For Families

  • Lough Erne Resort is a serene and luxurious lakeside resort. Its 120 rooms and suites are beautifully and traditionally decorated, with antiques, plush fabrics and original artworks by local artists and spectacular Lough Erne views. This is a large resort, with two golf courses, four restaurants, a Thai-inspired spa, a gym, indoor pool, an atmospheric whiskey bar and a kids’ games area. The resort will also help you out with golf lessons, or sailing, or mountain biking facilities… there’s a long list. Great for families, because they’ve already thought of everything!

For a Countryside Escape

  • Finn Lough is a collection of futuristic suites and villas, housed in great perspex domes amongst ancient woodlands. This is the closest you could get to sleeping under the stars without actually chancing a midnight downpour, because in most instances the beds are under one of the domes, allowing for serious stargazing. Many rooms also have their bathrooms behind glass. The rooms encourage rest and relaxation, and the other facilities follow the same line, including the spa and Slow Food restaurant, which grows a lot of what you’ll eat onsite. Yoga and meditation sessions are also offered, and you’re close to golfing, kayaking, surfing, cycling and fishing opportunities.

Travel Information

  • Enniskillen, County Fermanagh’s county town, is fairly centrally located within the county; the closest airport to Enniskillen is Belfast City Airport, which is an hour and a half away by car or taxi, or three and a half hours away by bus.
  • If you want to hire one we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • If you’re hoping to see County Fermanagh in the nicest possible weather, the best time to visit is between late spring and early summer. This part of Northern Ireland has mild, wet summers and damp, cool winters, with the maximum temperature remaining in single figures between about mid November and mid March. Spring is pretty with wildflowers and apple blossom, and if you wait until autumn you’ll see apple harvest and colourful foliage. Even winter has its appeals, especially if you like windswept walks, snowy mountain views, and roaring pub fires afterwards.
