About Crediton
Crediton is a very historic market town, known for being the birthplace of St. Boniface — who went on to become the patron saint of Germany and The Netherlands. The town's present-day appeals include its location, surrounded by some of the most scenic of Devon’s hills and valleys, just seven miles from Dartmoor National Park, and about 45 minutes drive from Exmoor. Our pick of the best places to stay in Crediton is a charming little pub with rooms situated just to the north of town.
Before the Normans arrived, Crediton was one of the largest towns in the area, and seat of the Bishops of Devon. It still has a wonderful parish church cum cathedral, an architecturally sublime offering in red-sandstone. Crediton went on to become more of a commercial centre, known for its wool, cloth, and dairy products. It is still a thriving destination, though now it’s all bijou galleries and boutiques, cafes and independent bookshops. You'll also find a number of excellent pubs.
The best places to stay in Crediton make a fantastic base for exploring all over Dartmoor and Exmoor and beyond, and for visiting Exeter and the Devon coastline too.
