The vibe is friendly and laid-back, and there's outdoor seating as well as a small hot tub in the garden. The gourmet breakfasts are top-notch.
Heavenly Valley Lodge offers an affordable and intimate base just a block from Lake Tahoe. The 13 cabin-style rooms feature handwoven textiles and crackling fireplaces as well as useful kitchenettes. There are bunk beds for kids and large, inviting gardens. Small and relaxed.
Alder Inn is a family-run property just five minutes from Lake Tahoe. The small garden offers a swimming pool, hot tub, BBQ area and seating amongst the towering pines. Simple, charming and welcoming, with only 24 rooms. Some of the area's best restaurants are a stroll away.
PlayPark Lodge is a welcoming 13-room inn with cosy interiors. Some rooms have spa baths, fireplaces and additional bunk beds. Tranquil, private and equally well-suited to couples, friends or families.

The Deerfield Lodge at Heavenly offers a contemporary take on the traditional alpine lodge. Marriott's Timber Lodge is made up to 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments with spacious living areas and kitchens. The complex includes a pool, hot tub, restaurant, games room and fun kids club. There's even a den for teens to hang out. Great for the whole family.
The Ridge at Tahoe overlooks Lake Tahoe from the Sierra Nevada Ridge. Ideal for those seeking easy access to the slopes, the hotel also has three tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools and a great restaurant. There's heaps for guests of all ages, including family suites and kids' activities.
Grand Residences by Marriott promises studios and multi-room residences with options for all group sizes. With a kids club, outdoor pool, gym, spa and restaurant onsite, this is an excellent family pick. It's also just a short stroll to the gondola which whisks you up to Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort.
