About Oklahoma

Named for the Choctaw phrase ‘okra humma’, Oklahoma is steeped in Native American history, as well as boasting picturesque mountains, expansive plains, dramatic red earth and an impressive 33 state parks. A hugely popular destination, Oklahoma offers a wide range of accommodation options, spanning from quirky self-catering apartments to opulent luxury hotels. Whether you’re eager to zip along Route 66 or to catch a rodeo, our pick of the best places to stay in Oklahoma features some striking city hotels, promising a taste of the region’s hubs before you venture out to discover its natural wonders.

Oklahoma has the largest population of Native Americans in the USA and is a brilliant place to discover Indigenous American history and culture. The Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival, held every June, is an excellent place to start, with a captivating programme of events for the whole family to enjoy. The Chickasaw Cultural Centre, Five Civilized Tribes Museum, Standing Bear Monument, Cherokee Heritage Centre and Red Earth Art Centre all make for fascinating visits, too. For a sense of the region’s Old West history, on the other hand, head to the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, or to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Stay on a working ranch for the ultimate cowboy experience, attend a buzzing rodeo event, or listen to some classic country music at a bar or live music venue. Oklahoma has a buzzing annual events scene — do look into what’s on before you plan your trip!

Lovers of the great outdoors will adore exploring leafy Beavers Bend State Park or Turner Falls Park, whilst you can admire the Ouachita Mountains from your car on the Talimena National Scenic Byway, a 186-mile stretch of beautiful road with panoramic viewpoints and various sites of historic interest. The byway is at its most glorious in the autumn, as the foliage changes colour. Don’t miss the chance to drive along the legendary Route 66, either. More than 400 miles of the iconic highway are located in Oklahoma, with the most impressive stretch being between Tulsa and Oklahoma City, along the Will Rogers Turnpike. Marvel at the Golden Driller statue in Tulsa and spot the super-kitsch Blue Whale of Catoosa as you ride across the region.

Home to abundant natural wonders, Oklahoma also has some lively metropolitan hubs, including Oklahoma City and Tulsa, as well as the intriguing city of Bartlesville. Oklahoma City promises a fascinating blend of Southern hospitality, cowboy culture and contemporary living, whilst Tulsa boasts the imposing Philbrook Museum of Art and super-cool Cain’s Ballroom, one of the USA’s top music venues — an epic place to catch a gig. Oklahoma’s first state capital, charming Guthrie, is also well worth a visit for its cultural sites and elegant Victorian-era architecture.

Whether you’re attracted by the history, the state parks or an adventure along Route 66, the best places to stay in Oklahoma promise a seriously special place to lay your head after an action-packed day of discovery. Oklahoma is especially popular with visitors during the summer months, so book your stay well in advance to avoid missing out!
